After 20 years of living here, we finally made it to Durango, Great Sand Dunes National Park, and Mesa Verde, and honestly? We were amazed. Planning a Colorado road trip means one thing—adventure is already in the air. The anticipation of rugged peaks, scenic byways, and outdoor adventures set against the backdrop of rustic, charming mountain towns in Colorado is half the fun. The other half? Actually getting there.
1. Aspen
When you think of Aspen, Colorado, you might immediately associate this mountain escape with world class skiing, winter sports, and one of the best ski resorts in Colorado. Aspen is not only one of the charming mountain towns in Colorado in the winter months but all year long as well. Forbes lists Aspen as one of the top 22 places to visit in the U.S. in 2022.

2. Breckenridge
Similar to Aspen, Telluride, and Vail, Breckenridge is a huge draw for winter sport enthusiasts. But, winter sports aren’t all that attracts tourists from all around the world. Much the same as many mountain towns in Colorado, Breckenridge boasts amazing outdoor adventures all year long!
- Choose a hiking trail – FYI, if you want to feel as though you are in the worst shape ever, start with the McCullough Gulch Trail! This trail STARTS at 11,000 feet! Scramble over boulders and rocky trails before reaching the Upper Blue Reservoir. If you are hiking as a family, there are many trails better suited to different levels of activity. If you are not acclimated to the high altitude in Colorado, you may wish to choose easier trails.
- Soar down the mountain on a bike – With the winter snowmelt, the trails around Breckenridge are typically ready for riders in July. Bring your own bike or rent. Breck (as it is often called) offers lessons for varying skill levels.
- Explore a Ghost Town – Have you ever been to a ghost town? Did you know that Colorado has numerous Ghost Towns that you can visit?
- Take a Mine Tour – While no longer operating as active mines, a few of the mines are still open for tours.
- Scenic Drives – Colorado has scenery that goes on for miles. Breckenridge is one of the best places in Colorado for picturesque mountain vistas. Many of our favorite family adventures begin with a scenic drive through the mountains.

3. Buena Vista
Buena Vista, or BV as it is often called, is one of my new favorite mountain towns in Colorado. Chris and I have visited numerous times over the past two summers and love the laid back vibe. There are so many things to do in Buena Vista:

- Experience a Drive-In Movie under the stars
- Sample Cheese at Jumpin’ Good Goat Dairy

4. Colorado Springs
Colorado Springs offers a hidden gem in Colorado that is really a magnificent marvel—The Garden of the Gods.
The Garden of the Gods is made up red rock formations. Purchased in 1879 by Charles Elliott Perkins, the “Garden” was originally scouted as an endpoint to the Burlington Railroad.
Due to the stunning beauty of the area, Perkins opted to leave the “Garden” in its natural state for his enjoyment as well as for the public to appreciate as well. In 1907, Perkins officially deeded the land to the city of Colorado Springs with the stipulation that it would always be FREE to the public.

11. Ouray
Ouray, Colorado, often called “The Switzerland of Colorado” and also known as “The Outdoor Capital of Colorado”, is located in a beautiful valley surrounded the San Juan mountains in the Southwest corner of Colorado.
Ouray Hot Springs Pool anyone? After a long day of exploring and adventures, take time to soak or play in Ouray’s sulfur-free hot springs (sulfur free = stink free). Bonus * Children under 4 and Seniors over 75 are FREE! The Hot Springs features two water slides, a playground, obstacle course, and climbing wall IN THE ACTIVITY POOL, lap lanes, two pools for the whole family to enjoy and an “adults only” soaking section.

12. Pagosa Springs

As you drive to Pagosa Springs, the road takes you through an amazing mountain pass and past the beautiful town of South Fork.

13. Salida
Hey, we’re still in the majestic San Juan Mountains of colorful Colorado. Salida gives you plenty of room to enjoy the view, hike a 14-er, or seek out adventure and thrills.
Did you know that the San Juan’s are home to the highest concentration of 13,000 and 14,000 foot mountains in the US? Ever heard of the Collegiate Peaks? There are nine 14-ers in those peaks alone:

15. Vail
The I-70 mountain corridor passes amazing small towns in Colorado one after another from Denver to Glenwood Springs. Perhaps you have heard of Vail? Vail has a vibrant European look and feel.

Day Hiking Gear
Be prepared for some awesome day hikes near the charming mountain towns in Colorado. Be sure to bring:
- Plenty of extra water and a Camelbak hydropack or hiking backpack with hydration pack. Zipfizz packets are great to add to your water bottle for a little extra oomph.
- Snacks
- Extra sun protection: sunscreen, a hat/visor, and sunglasses
- Rain jacket
- Hiking or trekking poles – Chris and I have discovered that trekking poles are a great help for stepping down tall steps and climbing over rocks. We carry one set of poles and Chris and I each use one.
- A bag to pack out all of your trash: fruit peels/cores, snack bags, toilet paper, and other waste.
- A camera. I bring my camera and my phone when hiking. Check out my camera gear recommendations.
- A backpack – Chris and I both love our The North Face Recon Backpacks (it makes one of the best day packs specifically for women).
- Hiking boots are essential for all hikes in Colorado—sturdy, comfortable footwear. Chris loves his Merrells.
- I am breaking in a new pair of Oboz.
- Fleece layer or puffy jacket (depending on the time of year) – If you are planning Colorado day hikes in the winter months, you really need winter hiking equipment. There is a Hiking and Cold Weather Gear section on my Amazon Storefront.

What a great collection of mountain towns. The only one we haven’t visited in summer is Creede, which is on our travel plans next month. Looking forward to it. One of our favorites not on here is Crested Butte. The wildflower hikes are incredible.

I’ve only heard of a couple of these places (through pop-culture) but there are some stunners here – especially Grand Lake and Ouray… that’s awesome that the via ferrata at Ouray is free because in many locations they can cost a pretty penny!
