It set the tone for what has become one of our favorite Colorado weekend getaways, and we’ve been finding excuses to go back ever since.

Glenwood Springs is one of the most underrated stops on a Colorado road trip—and once you’ve been, you’ll wonder why it took you so long. From the world’s largest hot springs pool to white-water rafting, stunning canyon hikes, and a historic downtown worth wandering, there are plenty of things to do in Glenwood Springs, Colorado no matter what season you visit. Adventure-seekers, families, and couples alike will find something worth coming back for.
1. Take the Train to Glenwood Springs from Denver
Taking the train to Glenwood Springs from Denver is an adventure worth doing at least once. Amtrak’s California Zephyr departs from Denver Union Station and arrives in Glenwood Springs in about six hours, with quick stops in Winter Park/Fraser and Granby along the way.
Ticket options range from coach (starting around $46 per person) to sleeper cars for those who want a more luxurious experience. Sleeper car packages include complimentary dining, lounge access, fold-down berths, linens, and a private restroom and shower. All passengers have access to the Observation Car and the Café, which offers snacks, drinks, and microwavable meals. Dining room access is reserved for sleeper car passengers only.
The Observation Car is the star of the show—the views through Glenwood Canyon alone are worth the trip. Fair warning: the windows can be dirty and reflective, so your smartphone will serve you better than a camera for photos. If you’d rather drive, Denver to Glenwood Springs is about three hours—but factor in I-70 winter conditions, ski traffic, and the occasional closure before you commit to that plan.
2. Relax at Iron Mountain Hot Springs
Iron Mountain Hot Springs is one of the newer facilities in town and offers a three-hour reservation experience on the banks of the Colorado River. Choose from 16 mineral pools, 10 “World Experience” pools designed to mimic hot springs from around the world, two freshwater pools with waterfalls, a cold plunge pool, and a jetted spa. Two cafés on-site handle the food and drink situation.
A few things to know before you go: flip flops are recommended as you move between pools, bring a refillable water bottle, and plan to take a break out of the water every 15 minutes. Your wristband indicates your reservation window and doubles as an RFID key for your locker—towels are included. Note that children under 5 are not allowed.
3. Join the Crowd at Glenwood Hot Springs
While Iron Mountain caters more to an adult crowd, Glenwood Hot Springs is the family-friendly option—worth knowing when planning your visit. Two large pools anchor the experience: a 92-degree pool for swimming, laps, and playing, and a hot springs pool at a whopping 104.8 degrees. The water contains 15 dissolved minerals including calcium, lithium, magnesium, and sulfate—some visitors swear by the restorative and healing properties, others just show up for the relaxation. Either way, you won’t be disappointed.
A few practical notes: lockers are available with a code, or just bring your stuff poolside. Pack a water bottle and refill as needed. In winter, a robe is a smart call—getting in on a 20-degree night is the hard part, but the steam rising off the water makes it worth every chilly second.
4. Visit the Vapor Caves at Yampah Spa
The Yampah Spa Vapor Caves are a Glenwood Springs experience unlike anything else. Descend into three natural underground rock chambers where hot mineral water flows through at 125°F, creating a steam bath environment that averages 110-112 degrees. Relax on marble slab benches in dimly lit rocky alcoves, inhale the natural steam, and let the stress melt away. Plan for 10-12 minute sessions with cooling breaks in between—a cold water room and solarium are available for recovery. It’s equal parts ancient and indulgent.
5. Explore Glenwood Springs Downtown
If you are looking for a few more things to do in Glenwood Springs, be sure to take a stroll around the walkable downtown along the banks of the Colorado River. 8. Ride the Glenwood Springs Gondola
Glenwood Springs claims the fame of having America’s only mountain top adventure park. You’ll likely agree, Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park offers fun for the whole family starting with the Glenwood Springs gondola ride up the side of the mountain.

Book an adventurous scavenger hunt to learn more about the humble beginnings of Glenwood Springs. You will need your phone to access the scavenger hunt, take pictures, and find clues.

Book a snowmobile adventure with Sunlight Snowmobile Tours. If you are lucky enough to have Ty as your tour guide, you are in for a treat. Within ten minutes of meeting everyone, he had memorized everyone’s names and made sure that each person on the tour had the appropriate footwear and helmet.
