Every year, our family heads to “A Colorado Christmas” with the Colorado Symphony, and we try to squeeze in a few more festive stops alongside it. From drive-thru shows to glowing gardens, the Christmas lights in Denver, Colorado, are worth braving the cold for. Some are free, some need timed tickets, and a few are best seen from the comfort of your heated car. Here are the displays I’d put at the top of your list.
1. Denver Parade of Lights
The Denver Parade of Lights kicks off December in the best possible way: helium-filled balloons, twinkling floats, marching bands, and a very famous guest of honor. A hit with families for more than 50 years, the parade draws more than 200,000 spectators who line downtown Denver streets to usher in the holiday season together. Best of all, it’s completely free. Stake out a curb spot early, or splurge on grandstand seats if you’d rather skip the elbowing. Bring a blanket, hand warmers, and a little patience for parking. RTD light rail is your friend here.

2. Blossoms of Light—York Street Denver Botanic Gardens
Denver Botanic Gardens has been dressing up for the holidays for more than 40 years, and Blossoms of Light is still the crown jewel of Denver’s Christmas lights. More than a million LED lights line a mile-long path through the York Street gardens, with highlights like a 200-foot light tunnel, glowing orbs on the Monet Pool, and projections on the Science Pyramid. Tickets are timed and sold online only (none at the door), and weekends sell out fast. For the best photos, head straight to the light tunnel, and go on a weeknight for fewer strangers in your frame.

Head southwest to Chatfield Farms in Littleton, where the Trail of Lights winds just under a mile past glowing cottonwoods, light tunnels, and the 1880s Hildebrand Ranch homestead. Tucked into the foothills under a dark sky, the lights glow for miles, and a shorter loop is available if little legs (or cold toes) give out early.
Grab kettle corn or hot cocoa at the start, then warm up with fudge at the warming hut halfway through. It’s a little more rustic and a lot more relaxed than the downtown displays.

Be sure to stop for the ice-carving demos, warm your hands at the fire barrels, and grab a festive treat or drink along the way. Weekends and the week between Christmas and New Year’s are the busiest, so aim for a weeknight if you can. Oh, and don’t forget to visit the animals!

5. Self-Guided Downtown Christmas Lights Walk
Some of the best Christmas lights in Denver are free, and you can see many of them in one easy two-mile Christmas Lights Walk. Start at Union Station, then duck into the heated Dairy Block alley in LoDo for a little European Christmas market charm. Wander up 16th Street, decked with colorful twinkling lights, and detour through Larimer Square. Finish at the City & County Building, which has been lit for the holidays since 1932. Tired feet? The 16th Street FreeRide shuttle connects most of the stops.

We don’t live terribly far from Denver, yet we’ve never been down there for Christmas. I didn’t know there was so much to do, but we will definitely have to consider this for future trips

There seems to be a lot of things to do in Denver for Christmas! I would love to visit the Botanical gardens, visit the Christmas markets and listen to the symphony orchestra. I have not been to Denver yet, but when I do, I will definitely look up your list even if it is not Christmas, 🙂

Wow! Maybe I need to get out to the rockies for Christmas. There’s so many things to do! I love Martha but I must say that I can’t decorate for Christmas until the day after Thanksgiving, as much as I want to, to me it’s a sin. Lol
We often don’t think of heading to cold weather spots for Christmas. But Denver looks like it offers a lot of things to put us in the holiday spirit. And an animated light show would be a lot of fun. If we got there before the holidays we might even get some shopping done!
