The Algarve is pure magic along the tip of Portugal! Did you know that Cabo de São Vicente (Cape Saint Vincent) was once considered the “edge of the world” by the Romans until the 14th century? The coastline may not be the edge of the world, but it will definitely give you explorer vibes as you discover Instagrammable spots in the Algarve as you explore things to do along Portugal’s southern coastline.
Before you start packing your camera bag, make sure you’ve covered the basics with my step-by-step international trip planning guide.
Instagrammable (adj. /ˈɪn.stə.ɡræm.ə.bəl): Attractive or interesting enough to be suitable for photographing and posting on the social media service Instagram. ~ Cambridge Dictionary
1. Castelo de Tavira in Tavira

The Old Town of Tavira is worth an afternoon of exploration to discover the beauty of this quaint town in the Algarve.
Wander the streets, visit the churches, cross over a Roman bridge, find colorful homes, and climb stairs to the Castelo de Tavira. Even in the castle grounds you’ll be enchanted by the brilliant pops of color with the blossoming bougainvillea.
Tip * Entrance to the Castelo de Tavira is free and you will also find free restrooms available within the castle walls. The small garden is beautifully kept.
Perched at the highest point in Tavira, the Castelo de Tavira offers sweeping views and one of the best Algarve photo spots in the area from this partially ruined fortress of the castle. In olden days, the castle was essential in guarding the fishing town from invading pirates and North African raiders.
For the best panoramic views and one of the Instagrammable spots in the Algarve, climb the steep stone steps to the battlements within the fortress.

2. Tavira Colorful Homes and Bougainvillea

Tavira is one of the oldest towns in the Algarve. Because of its strategic location, its roots can be traced back to around 2000 BC when the Phoenicians first settled the area. Even today, a Roman influence lingers.
The Arabic form of Tavira is “Tabira” which means “the hidden.” As you meander the alleyways and hidden streets of Tavira, you’ll love the colorful homes adorned with bougainvillea. These are the Algarve photo spots you’ll want to uncover.
Instagram Caption: I’ve got a crush on Tavira’s colorful houses 💕.
3. Ponte Antigua de Tavira (Tavira Old Bridge)

Whether you stand on the bridge to take pictures or snap a few photos along the canal as you wait for your lunch to be served, the bridge in Tavira is not only one of the best places to see in Algarve, but also one of the Algarve photo spots you won’t want to miss.
Up until 1989, the Old Bridge of Tavira was a main thoroughfare within Tavira. Today, as a footbridge, it connects the two sides of Tavira and offers great views with Instagram worthy photo opportunities.

4. Praia do Barril (Barril Beach)

Praia do Barril is one of thge popular beaches in the Algarve where you can enjoy restaurants, cafes, restroom facilities, umbrella and lounge rentals (you may need to prebook in the summer months as they go quickly), and the Anchor Cemetery.
This is a great beach for families as it features:
- A white sandy beach.
- A boardwalk.
- Clean restrooms.
- Lifeguard supervision in the summer.
If you keep walking to the west (or to the right on the boardwalk when facing the sea) for about 15 to 20 minutes, the beach becomes Praia do Homem Nu or “Naked Man Beach”.

5. The Anchor Cemetery at Praia do Barril

Once you reach Praia do Barril, take a few moments to explore the Anchor Cemetery on the sand dunes next to the beach. Today, there are over 250 rusting anchors buried deep in the dunes. The anchors are so heavy that it would take 16 men to carry just one and were once used to tether a web of nets at sea.
While the area is fenced off to protect the sand dunes and anchors, capture the anchors as a stunning backdrop to the sea.

6. Praia da Ilha de Tavira

Praia da Ilha de Tavira is considered to be one of the loveliest white sandy beaches in the Algarve. If you wish to spend the day relaxing on this small island, you’ll need to take the ferry from Tavira to Praia de Tavira across the Gilão River.
After snapping a dozen or so pics in this Algarve photo spot, you may wish to linger longer on the island. There are campsites available for reservation.

7. Ria Formosa Nature Park
The Ria Formosa Nature Park covers an extended area of the coast line in the Algarve from Garrão beach in Faro to Manta Rota (close to Cacela Velha). It can be a shifting, picturesque changing maze of canals, islands, marshland and sandy beaches connected to the Atlantic ocean.
Because of the protection of the barrier islands, it is not only a haven for wildlife but also an great location for salt production. If bird watching is your hobby, the park is a critical habitat for many migratory birds and and ideal spot for some Instagram shots of the wildlife you spot.

8. Cacela Velha

You WILL want to stop at Cacela Velha—the village on a hill! The views from the promenade behind the church are stunning. You’ll never see the same thing twice from one visit to the next as the views of the water and the beach are constantly changing with the winds and the tide.
Capture dramatic views of the sea and then stick around for sunset in Algarve.

9. Tunnel Beach in Albufeira

Tunnel Beach can be reached through a tunnel in the cliffs that links the Albufeira Old Town—Cidade Antiga—to the beach. The 65-foot tunnel is located near the tourist office. Chris and I followed the boardwalk to the point for more Instagrammable spots in the Algarve.
Tunnel Beach is sheltered by cliffs and makes a great place to photograph the sunset in Algarve. It is often crowded with tourists and locals in the summer months. You may find the waves are strong enough for surfing on some days. It may not always be the best beach for swimming.

10. Taking Selfies Along the Way

Sometimes the best travel memories are the ones that make us smile. Life is often a grand adventure of the happiest days strung together by passport stamps! Taking a selfie along the way captures the happy moments and keeps your travel memories alive.
Portugal Instagram Captions: Not just a place, it’s a Portuguese state of mind.
11. Ponta da Bandeira Fort

Ponta da Bandeira Fort, or simply the Lagos Fortress, was built late on in the 17th century. The entrance is accessed by a drawbridge over a moat! Within the fortress walls you’ll find a chapel as well as tiles dating to the 18th century.
Whether you view the structure from inside or outside the walls, I’m sure you’ll agree that it is photogenic.

12. Batata Beach in Lagos

Batata Beach, one of the best beaches in Lagos, is just off the Ponta da Piedade path. It is worth a detour for selfies and Instagrammable moments.
Chris and I walked along the beach in the late afternoon when families began filling up the beach and spreading out their blankets. Come to play. Come to take pictures. Come to relax at the end of a long day.

13. Camilo Beach in Lagos

Before descending the 200 steps to the beach below, stop and take in the views. Pretty sure you’ll agree that the Algarve is pure magic!

14. Ponta de Piedade in Lagos 0867
Ponta da Piedade (translating to Piety Point) needs to be on everyone’s bucket list. The Point is a cluster of rock formations, often towering 65 feet (20 meters) high. Within these golden rocks you’ll find caves, natural arches, towers and hidden grottos surrounded by the turquoise sea.
The best time of day for pictures? Golden hour as the sun begins its descent. Be sure to book a boat tour for a totally different perspective.

15. Tile in Lagos

Azulejo, (from Arabic al-zulayj): Meaning “little stone”, glazed colored tile traditionally used in Spanish and Portuguese buildings.
One of the things I wondered as Chris and I wandered through the small towns of the Algarve was if the colorful tile on homes represented a family’s name—much like Scottish plaid represents a family’s name. I don’t know that I ever saw two tile designs that were the same.
Regardless, the tiles are beautiful and intricate and totally Instagram worthy.
Portugal Instagram Captions: Feeling azulejo inspired in every corner of the Algarve.
16. Vila Real de Santo António in the Algarve
You can look from the banks of Vila Real de Santo António, Portugal’ southeasternmost city, across the Guadiana River to Ayamonte, Spain. It has a charming old town to explore and photograph.
Portugal Instagram Captions: Unwinding in the hidden gems of Portugal’s towns.
17. Hilton Vilamoura Hotel in Vilamoura

Chris and I stayed in Vilamoura for a couple of nights at the Hilton Vilamoura. The hotel was lush and green and offered a variety of pools and outdoor sunbathing options. Vilamoura would make a great “home base” for exploring Instagrammable spots in the Algarve.
Vilamoura draws golfers from around the world who enjoy golfing during the day and splurging on fine dining in the evening along the marina.

18. Santa Luzia Harbor and Sunset in Algarve

It may be hard to tell where Santa Luzia begins and Tavira ends. Santa Luzia is a quaint fishing village that seems to be untouched by time.
Enjoy the view of the colorful fishing fleet that docks in the lagoon each night. Sunset in Algarve is the perfect time to discover Algarve photo spots!
Portugal Instagram Captions: Sunsets and seaside—I must be in the Algarve!
19. Bougainvillea in Loulé

Chris and I visited Loulé on our last day in Portugal. If you are planning a stop in Loulé, these are a few places to see in Algarve on your itinerary besides wandering the streets and photographing the beautiful bougainvillea:
- Visit Quinta da Tôr winery to learn more about the art of wine making.
- Discover the Algarve and the history of a rock salt mine.
- Indulge your senses at Loulé market.
- Search for treasures in the craft and souvenir shops in Loulé.
- Visit an art gallery.
- Explore the castle.
- Visit the ruins of the Islamic baths in Loulé.

20. Pottery Window in Loulé

This pottery store window in Loulé was decorated with all kinds of colorful plates. It is the perfect backdrop for Instagrammable spots in the Algarve. I couldn’t help but take a picture. When you’re done taking photos, head inside to grab some souvenirs!

FOMO: Places We Didn’t Have Time to Visit in the Algarve
If you feel you might suffer from FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) while visiting Portugal, you may wish to add one or all of these additional itinerary ideas to your bucket list of places to see in Algarve.
21. The Algarve Benagil Caves
The Benagil Cave—Algar de Benagil—should be at the top of everyone’s list. I’m not sure how Chris and I missed out on a tour here, but when we weren’t exploring we were relaxing at the beach.
But…you will want to visit the caves. Here are a few things to remember:
- Tourists are not allowed to disembark from a boat tour while inside the cave.
- Because this area is so popular, each boat tour is allowed only a few minutes inside the cave.
- The hole or chimney in the ceiling of the cave allows the sun’s ray to shine through. Pretty sure you’ll agree that this cave in the Algarve is pure magic!
- Because the cave is so busy, you might find it difficult to get the best photograph.
- If you want to take pictures, it is recommended that you plan your tour first thing in the morning when it might be less busy.
- Book your tours early as you can see they are “Likely to Sell Out”!

22. Old Town Faro
If you are looking for a fabulous place to wander and take pictures, consider spending the afternoon in Old Town Faro.
Faro’s picturesque Old Town is made up of cobbled streets and squares within a medieval wall. It’s a peaceful place, largely pedestrianized, and preserving 18th-century architecture. There are three gateways, with the main one being the iconic Arco da Vila, a neoclassical arch built after the 1755 earthquake. Although the disaster destroyed most of the city, much of the Old Town survived. Its main square is Largo da Sé, lined with orange trees and home to the cathedral, the Town Hall, and the Bishop’s Palace. ~ Faro Portugal Tourism
Climb to the top of the Bishop’s Palace for sweeping views of the new and old parts of Faro.
The second gateway is Porta Nova or New Gate which leads to the pier where you’ll find the ferries and speed boats that take you to the beaches nearby. The third gateway—leading the town’s oldest section— is the Arco do Repouso or Gate of Rest. If you are seeking Algarve photo spots here, you can walk over the the walls to appreciate the view over the rooftops. Access this walk through the Casa do Repouso building.

23. Roman Ruins in the Algarve
We had hoped to visit the Roman Ruins in Vilamoura when we stayed at the Hilton Vilamoura for a couple of nights, but Chris and I arrived in the area over a weekend and sadly the ruins were closed. These historical ruins—the Roman Ruins of Cerro da Vila—include two villas complete with baths, a necropolis (cemetery), and fish salting stations.
You will also see a few standing walls, friezes of marble (broad horizontal bands of sculpted or painted decoration), stucco, and mosaic pavement decor.
The Roman Villa close to Faro, Portugal is designated as a National Monument. As Chris and I visited Faro on May 1st—Labor Day—the site was closed as well. However, it would have been awesome to explore (just like when we visited Pompeii in Italy). The ruins consist of a once luxurious villa with a bath, temple, mausoleum, and outbuildings for commerce.

24. Marinha Beach in Lagos

Ahh…the iconic heart-shaped rock from the top of the cliffs by Marinha Beach in Lagos. You’ll want to set up your shot perfectly to align the arches in the rock with cliffs and foliage above.
There are steps that you can descend to reach the beach below, but be sure to take in the view above first. Sunset in Algarve would be the ideal time to capture some amazing color.
Capture the true heart of the Algarve in a photo at Praia da Marinha. Lonely Planet loves this beach and adds it to their list of top 10 best beaches in the Algarve. The beach is located in Caramujeira.
Portugal Instagram Captions: Cliffs, seas, and thrills…thank you, Portugal!
25. Praia dos Estudantes

Discover Students Beach, part of a series of beaches in Lagos, separated by cliffs. Praia dos Estudantes is small, but definitely worth a visit. The “Roman Arch” (though not of ancient construction) is one of the Instagrammable spots in the Algarve that you have to see to believe. The arch was once a part of a fort that collapsed in the great earthquake of 1755.

Where to Stay in the Algarve
Chris and I loved the Hotel Vilamoura for part of our vacation in Portugal, but there are so many places to stay in the Algarve—Faro, Lagos, Tavira. Faro is close to the airport, Lagos boasts beautiful places to see in Algarve, Tavira has a small town appeal.

What a great list, I haven’t been to Portugal yet but have heard lots about the Algarve. Tunnel beach reminds me of some of the beaches in Australia with the golden sand.
Why does the sky over the Algarve always look so dreamy??
I think Portugal is massively underrated, and not many of us Europeans travel there (compared to Spain, Greece or Italy) , even though it is very accessible. Myself included, for no particular reason – been to Lisbon once and loved it. These are some beautiful spots, saving these for later!
Your photos are stunning. I visited Lisbon and Porto when I was in Portugal but unfortunately I didn’t have time to visit the Algarve. I need to go back again!
So many beautiful spots to enjoy! Makes me want to plan a return trip to see those we missed.
