And just a reminder, be sure to check out the clothing requirements before you arrive so that you won’t be surprised. There are a number of naturist beaches in Portugal. Knowing what to expect before you go is exactly why my step-by-step international trip planning guide exists — a little research goes a long way.
1. Praia do Barril, Santa Luzia

Praia do Barril lies close to the small village of Santa Luzia—not too far from the town of Tavira. It is a bit of a trek to get to the beach. Start walking on the footpath from Santa Luzia and cross a small bridge over the estuary. From there, you can either take the small tourist train departing from Pedras d’El Rei or walk along the path for less than a mile (1.3 km) through the Ria Formosa. In the summer months, a ferry from Ilha de Tavira is also an option.
Chris and I were happy to find restaurants, cafes, restroom facilities, umbrella and lounge rentals (pre-booking in the summer months is highly recommended), and the Anchor Cemetery once we arrived at the beach.
Praia do Barril features:
- A white sandy beach backing to sand dunes
- A boardwalk
- Calm sea water
- A lifeguard on duty in the summer months
If you are looking for Praia do Homem Nu or “Naked Man Beach” once you arrive at the beach, then turn to your right on the boardwalk and keep walking to the west for about 15 to 20 minutes.
2. Praia da Batata, Lagos

Praia da Batata is located close to the Lagos city center and many families enjoy a quick trip to the beach for the afternoon. It is easy to access and popular among the locals. Chris and I enjoyed a leisure walk along the beach as families played in the sand, relaxed, and chatted with friends.
Because of its location and sheltering by the cliffs, the seawater is typically safe to swim in (be sure to follow safety protocols). You will find lifeguard supervision in the summer months. The beach—close to restaurants and cafes—is among the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve.
3. Praia de Cabanas
Praia de Cabanas tempts the traveler to a refreshing dip in the crystal clear water of this often deserted beach. While the beach is long, it is not very wide. The white sand is soft and backs to sand dunes making it one of the best places to go in the Algarve for a quiet, relaxing beach day.
You can reach the island with a 5-minute water taxi ride from the seaside village of Cabanas de Tavira. Once you disembark from the water taxi, walk along the boardwalk to the beachfront restaurant, bar, and the beach. The boardwalk is intended to protect the nature on the island, especially since this barrier island is part of the Ria Formosa Nature Park and lagoon.
4. Praia de Cacela Velha

Cacela Velha is an idyllic village which sits on a hilltop overlooking the beach with a few homes, a fort, a church, a cemetery, and fantastic views. The water here is perfect for a day at the beach. It is possible to reach this beach by walking from the small village of Manta Rota and Praia da Manta Rota (another popular beach to the east of the Cacela Velha for your Algarve beach bucket list).
The white sands of Praia de Cacela Velha are often shifting and changing due to the winds and the waves—the beach always looks a little different each time you visit. Families are frequent visitors as the waters are calm and shallow and typically safe for children. As a bonus, the average water temperature is a little higher than other “praias do Algarve”, so it’s good for swimming and one of the best places to go in the Algarve for a day at the beach.
There are no lifeguards, toilets, cafes, or facilities at this beach.
5. Praia do Camilo
With 200 steep wooden steps leading down to the sandy beach of Praia do Camilo in Lagos, Portugal, you may wonder why your added this destination to your Algarve beach bucket list. Consider the stairs a part of your exercise routine for the day as this beach is one of the instagrammable spots in Lagos that you’ll want to take a moment to photograph and enjoy. Then spread out your beach towel, relax, and enjoy a day at the beach.
If you are following the Ponta da Piedade path toward the lighthouse, you’ll also find the Ponta de Piedade here. It is a contoured rock formation with caves intricately cut out by the sea. If you want to see the best view of this regional landmark, you may wish to take a boat tour that allows a perspective looking inland as you motor by.
Praia do Camilo is known for its stunning cliffs, unique rock formations, and crystal-clear blue turquoise waters. Praia do Camilo is often considered one of the most beautiful beaches and best places to go in the Algarve.
6. Praia da Ilha de Tavira
Praia da Ilha de Tavira is considered to be one of the loveliest white sandy beaches in the Algarve. The only way to get from Tavira to Praia de Tavira is by ferry (Quatro Aguas) on the Gilão River (water taxis are also available at certain times of the year.
Features of Praia da Ilha de Tavira:
- Camping facilities
- Restaurants and cafes
- Restrooms
- Lifeguard supervision in the summer
- Rentals for wicker parasols, sunshades and loungers
- Massages
- Play soccer or volleyball in the sand
7. Praia do Túnel

Also known as Praia do Peneco, this city beach connects to Albufeira through a tunnel. Like many other beaches, Tunnel Beach is also sheltered by stunning cliffs and makes one of the best Instagrammable sunset spots in the Algarve. It is often crowded with tourists and locals in the summer months as it is easy to access. On some days, the waves are strong enough for surfing which means swimming at this beach may be more of a challenge.
Chris and I found the sand to be more of a golden, red color. We walked along the boardwalk past the stairs up the side of the cliff to the point and enjoyed the views and sunshine.
