If you are thinking about day trips from Ljubljana when you visit Slovenia, you really ought to include an adventure in Vintgar Gorge. “Vintgaring” through the canyon of Triglav Mountain is amazing with the crystal clear, brilliant green water, rapids, and waterfalls of the Radovna River. Chris and I added hiking through Vintgar Gorge onto a day trip to Lake Bled and it was simply magical.
Vintgar Gorge is just 3 miles (5 km) from Bled and easy to access whether you are walking, riding a bike, taking a taxi, driving a car, or taking the Vintgar shuttle! The best thing about a hike through the gorge is that it is only 1 mile (1.6 km) long. Follow raised boardwalks as they cross back and forth over the river, and if you are like me, your camera won’t be still for long! Choose one of two themed trails as you make a return trip back to the Vintgar Visitor Center for an experience that lasts 2.5 to 3 hours.

Slovenia doesn’t get nearly enough credit, and Vintgar Gorge is exactly the kind of hidden gem that makes you wonder why you waited so long to visit. If you are planning a trip to Slovenia, these 19 tips will set you up for an adventure worth every step—and if the logistics of getting to Slovenia are still fuzzy, my international trip planning guide is a great place to start diving into the details.
1. Purchase Tickets
Before Chris and I even left for our trip to Europe, we purchased our timed-entry tickets to visit the gorge. While you used to be able to purchase tickets in person at the visitor center as well, tickets must now be purchased online, from the shuttle bus station at Lake Bled, or at Vintgar Hubs at either of the FREE parking lots nearby.
All-in-One Pass Pricing for Vintgar Gorge:
- Adults, Students, and Seniors: 15,00 € per person
- Children aged 3 to 15: 5,00 € per person
- Pets: 3,00 € per pet
Check the website for guided tour times and prices as well as group pricing.
Please note that some sections of the Vintgar Gorge trail are not easily accessible for strollers or wheelchairs. The trail can be narrow, slippery, and uneven.
2. Use Public Transportation to Get to Vintgar
If you are visiting Lake Bled for the day, AND you have already purchased your ALL-IN-ONE PASS for Vintgar Gorge, simply return to the BLED bus station and hop on the Vintgar Shuttle bus. This first shuttle runs every half hour and will drop you off at the Vintgar Central Parking Area LIP. Catch a second shuttle from the parking area at Vintgar Gorge to the visitor center. Once the shuttle drops you off, it is just a short walk up to the visitor center, an outdoor rest area, restrooms, and the entrance to the gorge.
Be sure to give yourself plenty of time to make all of the shuttle connections and arrive at the gorge for your reserved entry time slot. If you happen to miss your scheduled time, you will need to wait until the next available time slot.
3. If You Drive a Car, Use the FREE Car Parks

If you are arriving at Vintgar Gorge by car, free parking is available at Car Park 1—Vintgar LIP Car Park—close to Sp. Gorje on the map above. From here, you can take the shuttle to the visitor center. You will want to give yourself plenty of time for your connections to arrive in time for your reserved entry time slot—the shuttle bus from the parking area to the visitor center takes about 20 minutes.
Car Park 3—Vintgar Blejska Dobrava Car Park—is located next to the cemetery in the small village of Blejska Dobrava. The shuttle runs every hour on the hour from here. If you are interested in a shorter trip through the gorge, choose Car Park 3. After leaving the gorge at Šum waterfall, there is a 10 to 15 minute walk back to this car park.
Bike and motorcycle parking is available at the shuttle drop off point close to the visitor center.
4. Visit the Vintgar Visitor Center
While you used to be able to purchase your ticket at the visitor center, that is no longer possible. However, the visitor center is the perfect place to visit as you are waiting for your allotted time slot to enter the gorge. Feel free to ask questions, pick up pamphlets, or purchase snacks and small mementos.
5. Use the Restroom Before Entering the Gorge
There are free restrooms available for use before you begin your adventure in Vintgar Gorge at the visitor center. You can also make use of the restrooms at the small cafe by the Šum waterfall after you exit the gorge. These two facilities are about 45 minutes apart, so plan accordingly.
6. Drink Plenty of Water

Did you know that the locals drink the water of the Radovna River? You can enjoy this cold, mountain water as well by filling your water bottles from the outdoor drinking fountain at the visitor center. Be sure to bring enough water for your hike through the gorge plus the round trip return.
7. Helmets are Required
Wearing a helmet is mandatory while visiting Vintgar Gorge. This requirement started in 2024 as a protective measure against falling rocks and rock slides. Not to worry though, helmets are provided at the entrance to the gorge. You will return the helmet once you reach the end of the walk at the small cafe at the Šum Falls exit point. You will not need to wear a helmet through either of the themed walks that return you to the visitor center.
If hygiene is a concern, visitors are provided with a disposable cap to wear under the helmet.
NOTE * There is a 50 € fee for any lost or damaged helmets.
8. Only Walk in the Posted Direction

Vintgar Gorge allows traffic to flow only in one direction from the visitor center to the Šum waterfall exit point. Why? Due to its popularity, the one-way route helps to reduce the traffic jams, keeps the flow of visitors steady, and lessens the jostling of visitors.
NOTE * There is a 50 € fine for walking in the wrong direction through the gorge!
9. Leave No Trace
Your motto should be to leave the great outdoors better than you found it! When you “Leave No Trace” at Vintgar Gorge, you are mindful to stay on the trail, pick up your trash, and avoid stepping on small plants off the trail.
10. Do Not Pick the Flowers or Plants
More than 600 plant species can be found in the canyon of Vintgar Gorge. The gorge has been carved and established over 1000’s of years, as such, it is a unique ecosystem that warrants care to protect it for many more years.
“The Gorje Tourist Association is aware of the sensitivity of the natural ecosystem in the Vintgar Gorge area. In collaboration with the Slovenian Museum of Natural History and the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, we have conducted a new survey of vegetation. The list of recorded fern and seed plant species includes as many as 540 plants, including 23 protected ones.” Vintgar Gorge
Choose Your Return Experience
11. The River of Trees Trail
Forest Vintgaring leads through the forest following the River of Trees Trail. Discover both a diverse plant and animal life. This trail is shorter, more shaded, and a little more strenuous as it climbs 820 feet (250 m) above the gorge as you return to the visitor center. It would be perfect if you wish to beat the heat in the middle of the day. The total length (including the section through the gorge) is 2.7 miles (4.3 km).
12. The King of Triglav Mountain Trail

Explore an alpine landscape by Vintgaring along the King of Triglav Trail. This is also the recommended trail for children to explore. Because this is a sunnier route, you may wish to chose this trail in the morning or late afternoon. This trail offers panoramic views of Bled, local farms and villages, and Triglav mountain. The total length including the gorge, is 3.5 miles (5.7 km).
13. Vintgar Gorge is Family Friendly
If you are visiting Slovenia as a family and have planned to explore Ljubljana or want to take a day trip from Lake Bled to the gorge, vintgaring through the gorge is designed to be a family-friendly experience where kids can step into a magical world. There are fun and educational tasks along the trail just for them.
After you have finished hiking through the gorge, pick your return by following the Children’s Trail on the King of Triglav Mountain Trail. You will find ten adventure spots specifically for kids. Scan the QR code to hear the sights, sounds, stories, and facts about the area. Complete all of the tasks at each adventure spot to receive a special book at the end.
Because of the uneven nature of the boardwalk and paths along the entire trail, strollers are not allowed. This Children’s Trail is best designed for children 3 and up.
14. Pets Must Be on a Leash
If you choose to bring your dog, note that they will need to be leashed AT ALL TIMES; you must purchase a digital Vintgar Gorge All-in-One Pass for them as well. The website also states that dogs must wear a muzzle while traveling on the shuttle buses.
15. Stay on the Elevated Boardwalk & Walking Paths

To protect the unique ecosystem of the gorge, it is essential that all visitors stay on the marked trails. You may also note that it is prohibited for guests to:
- Climb on the boardwalk rails or the bridges
- Swim in the river
- Approach the river
- Throw items in the river
- Litter
16. Go At Your Own Pace
You should allow about 2.5 to 3 hours for your adventure in Vintgar Gorge. That said, you can go faster or slower and explore at your own pace. As noted in tip #9, the gorge allows for traffic flow in one direction only. That doesn’t mean you can’t go slower and allow others to pass you or pass others at a safe point as you want to move a little faster along the path. Once you exit the gorge at the Šum waterfall, you will choose your return adventure where you can still determine your pace.
NOTE * Again, there is a 50 € fine for walking in the wrong direction through the gorge.
17. Wear Appropriate Footwear and Clothing
As with any outdoor adventure, you will want to be mindful of the conditions. Be sure to wear appropriate footwear, and come dressed for the weather. On cooler days, bring a jacket and maybe an umbrella. On warmer, sunny days, bring a hat, wear your sunglasses (my favorite are my Ray Bans), and don’t forget the sunscreen.
18. Use Your Smartphone to Scan QR Codes
Throughout our adventure in Vintgar Gorge, Chris and I scanned QR codes with his phone along the trail to learn local lore, fun facts, and uncover the history of the gorge.
19. Take Lots of Pictures

If you are hoping to capture stunning photos while hiking through Vintgar Gorge, you will definitely need your phone or some awesome camera gear. Whichever camera or phone you choose to bring, have it ready for the Instagrammable moments along the way. Be mindful of others when you stop to take pictures. Bringing a large tripod would just not be practical on the narrow paths.
Note * The use of drones is prohibited.

What is Vintgaring?

Kind of cool that the term “Vintgaring” has been coined specifically to signify hiking through Vintgar Gorge in Slovenia. The 1 mile (1.6 km) hike through the gorge takes approximately 45 minutes. You won’t find the word in the dictionary, but “vintgaring” includes the hike through the gorge plus the 1.5 – 2 hour return trip to the visitor center on one of two themed trails.
- Alpine Vintgaring aka The King of Triglav Trail: This longer, sunnier return trail is 2.5 miles (4.1 km) long and takes about 2 hours as you explore the historical and cultural heritage of the region. This trail is family-friendly (though not suitable for strollers) and involves an interactive experience for kids.
- Forest Vintgaring aka The River of Trees Trail: You may enjoy this shorter, shadier trail of 1.7 miles (2.7 km) where you can focus on the diversity of plant and animal life on Triglav Mountain for approximately 1.5 hours.

When was Vintgar Gorge Discovered?

The discovery of Vintgar Gorge happened by chance after the winter of 1891 when the lack of winter rainfall resulted in a significantly low water level on the Radovna River. Taking advantage of the unique weather conditions, Jakob Žumer, the mayor of Gorje, and Benedikt Lergetporer, a cartographer and photographer from Bled, began exploring what was once thought to be an out-of-reach gorge.
After the discovery, it took only two short years for wooden walkways, bridges, and galleries to be constructed through the natural wonder. Vintgar Gorge officially opened for public tours on August 28, 1893 and quickly became a complement to the growing tourism in Lake Bled.
Today, thousands of tourists visit Vintgar Gorge every year. The popularity of this epic adventure has increased so much that timed-entry tickets are required for your visit. You will find that the summer months—July and August—are the busiest.
